If you are moving home and are a budgerigar fancier and keep an aviary in your home then you will have to decide how to transport the chattering birds to your new abode. Don’t think you simply put the defenceless birds into the back of a van and that’s the finish of it. There is quite a lot more to bird transportation than meets the eye. Fortunately, budgies are not as hypersensitive as a lot of species of birds and can usually put up with car travel with reasonable resilience and with out too much feather fluttering.

In order to protect the birds from injury, the cage that is to be used for transporting must be fairly small. If a large cage is used the birds will be able to move around a lot more than in a smaller cage. This situation runs the risk of injury if the birds start to get flustered and a smaller cage will restrict their ability to flutter around too much. Also, if an injury does occur it is far more difficult to catch them to treat them in a larger cage than a smaller more compact one.

Once the cage has been sourced, it should be kept free of the normal accessories that are often placed in bird cages, that is swings, tree branches and perches. A couple of well secured resting bars that the birds can grip on are quite adequate. If the vehicle comes to a jerky stop any accessories might pose a threat; for example feeding bowls could be thrown around the cage and could wound the birds. These should be removed from the cage or simply not put in there in the first place.

The bottom of the cage could be draped with some newspaper or possible some paper towels. It is not a sensible idea to place grit or sand in a cage that is to be used for transport. The birds have the ability to kick around dust and sand when they flap their wings in the cage. Such an incident could lead to sand being blown into the car driver’s eyes which could lead to a nasty accident.

Once the cage has been prepared and put into the car it should be secured on the seat with one of the car’s safety belt. The safety belt can be extended if it does not have enough length by using some extra rope.

Birds, like us, can suffer from heat stress so after commencing the journey the car’s air conditioning should be used to keep the environment at a sensible temperature. Likewise an early morning start in winter the car might be too cold so measures should be taken to ensure reasonable temperature control. The cage could be draped in a blanket as well so as to ensure the birds are kept warm enough. The car should be stopped every couple of hours so that the birds can be supplied with food and water.

In summary, don’t assume that birds can be shunted around the country like a piece of furniture, care should be taken to reduce trauma.

My grandfather Dean is old and a little forgetful but he’s very adorable and reliable most of the time. One time he told me that he was going to the store and asked me if I had anything that needed buying. It was so kind of him to offer since he knew that I was busy at home.
