Albatross – Pride of the Oceons
The albatross es, from the Diomedeidae family are one of the largest sea birds. They are found mainly in Northern Pacific and Southern Oceans. They feed on squids, krills and fish either by scavenging, surface seizing or diving.
Albatrosses are colonial birds, resting for most parts on remote oceanic islands. Pair bonds between male & female are formed that generally last for the life of the pair. The breeding season is the most suitable season with abundant food and water available for the hatchlings. Fledging is a stage in a young bird’s life, when feathers and wings are sufficiently developed for flight.
Albatrosses create large nests of grass, shrub, soil, peat and feathers. Both parents incubate the egg and lose as much as 83 gms of weight a day. After hatching, the chick is guarded with utmost care & aggrassion by the parents and fed as much as 600 gms of food a day. They are taught to thermoregulaye and feed for themselves over 280-300 days. Albatrosses are among the most caring parents among all species.
